Core Seminars, our adult education hour, help us to comprehend the subtle intricacies and overarching truths of our God and the theology, ministry, and history He has authored. Meeting every Sunday morning at 9:30am for one hour, Core Seminars run on multiple tracks and are open to all.

Main Sunday Service

Sunday, 10:30am

Profile

Age-wise, we are young. Sunday morning attendance is between 900 and 1,000 people. Dress trends toward business-casual, though you can find anything from jeans to suits. People are friendly, though with 200+ visitors each week, you’ll need to be bold and introduce yourself.

Beginning

On Sunday morning at 9:30am we come together for an hour for our Core Seminar programs, in which we learn about God’s Word and its application to all areas of life. Following that, we begin our Sunday morning service at 10:30am. As we find our seats in the Main and West Halls, we sing songs to prepare our hearts for the service. (Families, please note that check-in for nursery and children’s classes during the morning service begins at 10:15am. We recommend arriving by 10:15am to allow time for the check-in process.)

Music

The music we sing at CHBC is a blend of old and new. We love the doctrinally rich hymns of the sixteenth century and we find blessing in the choruses of the twenty-first. Most of us who are comfortable with music from one particular era have discovered, while at CHBC, that we have come to enjoy other songs we had not previously encountered. We strongly prefer congregational singing, which emphasizes the gathered body singing praise to God with one voice, over performed music, which tends to spotlight the abilities of some while encouraging passivity in the rest.

Body of Service

Our service formally begins at 10:30am, led most often by an elder or pastoral staff member. During this time, we sing several songs, offer prayers of praise and confession to God, hear Scripture read, and give our offerings and tithes.

Sermons

Preaching at CHBC is generally expositional, meaning that it seeks to declare the point of a particular Biblical passage. Sermons usually last around an hour and are packed with material for reflection. On a regular basis, our sermon series alternate between the Old and New Testaments. All preaching is driven by the Gospel, the Bible’s main message of God saving sinners through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Post Sermon

We sing a hymn encapsulating the theme of the sermon and then take our seats once more for a brief moment of silent reflection. A typical service is finished by 12:45pm. We provide light refreshments in the West Hall immediately after the service to encourage fellowship. An hour later, you might still find folks talking over the sermon and events of the past week.

Prayer and Praise

Sunday, 5:00pm

Our church family times combine singing, sharing and prayer. We come together at 5:00pm to lift up our praise to God in song, generally singing a blend of traditional and contemporary music for fifteen minutes. After one of our pastors leads us in a brief prayer, we hear announcements and share matters for prayer from both our corporate and individual lives, including things like evangelistic efforts, special needs, and birth and wedding announcements. We then lift up our petitions and praises to God.

Once we’ve prayed together, a leader in the church gives a brief devotional on a biblical text relating to the morning’s message. This passage is found in the Testament opposite that preached in the morning service. These talks are weighted toward application in the life of the believer and the church. The service concludes by singing a hymn and reflecting on God’s Word. Fellowship usually follows as members take yet another time to talk and enjoy each other’s company.

Bible Study

Wednesday, 7:00pm

Members and visitors assemble for an inductive Bible study in which we think through a small passage of Scripture together. Held in our West Hall at 7:00pm, the pastor leading the study opens it with a brief reading from an insightful Christian book. He gives a few announcements, reads the evening’s text, and prays. We then launch into our study of the Word, asking three questions of the text:

  • What does it say?
  • What does it mean?
  • What does it mean for me?

Our goal in Wednesday Night Bible Study is not simply to learn from the selected text but to learn how to study the Bible in our private devotions and apply it to our personal lives.

Though more than 100 people attend it each week, Wednesday Night Bible Study feels much smaller, as members freely participate in the textual discussion, some focusing on a translator’s rendering of a verse, others looking more at how that verse affects some aspect of their spiritual life. When our discussion wraps up around 8:00pm, we pray, sing a verse of a hymn, and are dismissed.
